Join us May 14-16 for a geocache scavenger hunt in our local woods!

3 hikes, 3 levels & raffle prizes so amazing, it's fun for all ages!

What is the Haldane Geocaching Hike? What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an activity which uses mobile phones and other navigation techniques such as GPS, QR codes and even an old fashioned map, to hide and locate a point, object or container which are called 'caches' or 'geocaches' - very similar to a treasure hunt.

The Haldane Geocaching Hike is the first of its kind in the area. As the weather gets nicer, we want everyone to get outside to enjoy the weather and the amazing number of hikes we have around the Hudson Highlands. Participants will have the ability to enter and win a ton of great prizes from our local sponsors – most importantly, raise money for Haldane!

About The Hikes

Hike #1: The West Point Foundry Preserve

“This site mixes abandoned buildings and hidden waterfalls with amazing history to create one of the Hudson Valley’s must-visit destinations.” Perfect for all ages, dogs welcome, Partially wheelchair accessible. Enter at 80 Kemble Ave, or at the end of track #1 at the Cold Spring train station

Hike #2: Nelsonville Footpath to Undercliff Yellow Trail

This moderate hike nestled behind Haldane is a fun, easy trail which turns into a harder climb when you catch the Undercliff Trail (yellow markers.) Park or walk to enter trail in the winter parking by the Masonic Lodge. Good for age six and up, dogs welcome.

Hike #3: Highland Trail, Teal Trail

This challenging “secret” hike off Fishkill Avenue (after Lone Star Trail and before you hit the firehouse on the left, coming from town) is full of giant boulders, trees, and streams steadily climbing to make you have fun and sweat at the same time. Good for ages 8 and up.

How does it work?

We placed 5 markers with QR codes (caches) on each of the 3 hikes that anyone with a mobile device can scan and be directed to clues to locate the next point on the hike. The first cache for each hike will be clearly visible at each of the three trailheads.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the Geocache but to be eligible for the raffle prizes, users will have to purchase tickets.

How much does it cost to play?

$10 to register for each hike – that's $30 for all. Each hike has fives 'caches' to find along the way, each with the ability to improve your chances in the raffle. Once you have scanned all caches on a particular hike, that will complete the hike.  On each hike, there will be extra chances to multiply your raffle entries so you want to scan them all!

Grand Prize for this event includes a Deluxe Cabin package for two nights at Roscoe Campsite Park that also includes kayak and bike rentals!

Other great prizes include from our local sponsors include:

  • Buy one, get one free Kayak rental from Hudson River Expeditions

  • $150 Gift Certificate from the Cold Spring Apothecary

  • Luxe throw from Paulette’s

  • Gift Certificate from Poor George

  • Gift Certificate Wyld Plants & Co.

Not into hiking but still want to help the foundation and possibly win some great prizes? Raffle tickets are just $10 per entry. All funds raised throughout the event go to the Haldane School Foundation.
