Haldane/Hudson Environmental Learning Program - H.E.L.P.
In June 2001, the Haldane School Foundation received a grant from the New
York State Department of Environmental Conservation Hudson River Estuary
Grants Program for $12,715.85 to develop the H.E.L.P. (Haldane/Hudson
Environmental Learning Program) Summer Institute. The Hudson River
Estuary Grants Program, funded through the State's Environmental
protection Fund (EPF) provides grants to not-for-profit corporations and
municipalities. The program is designed to build partnerships with community
organizations by funding local projects that contribute to the river's renewal
and protection along the Hudson River.
The Haldane/Hudson Environmental Learning Program (HELP) is an
important initiative of the Haldane School Foundation. The mission of HELP
is to use the Hudson River valley as a classroom for a cross-curricular, multi-
grade study of the natural world, featuring modern technology, related
cultural arts, independent study for students, teacher training opportunities,
and hands-on learning. A long-range goal is to establish the Hudson River
as a resource for educational programs.
QUOTE FROM ALUMNI:
"The H.E.L.P. Institute is the opportunity for the staff K-12 to learn and work
together. It allows people who are usually isolated – because of the nature of
our profession – to form a bond, to discuss and communicate in a common
topic and models differentiated instruction where one topic may span many
levels of instruction – an invaluable lesson for educators. Also, one of the
criticisms of education is that new teachers coming out of college lack an
understanding and passion for their subject matter. It is the “understanding
and passion for” a very complicated resource which taking the course more
than once – develops. You always learn more because the course changes
and people become invested in their learning. I wanted you to understand
why, as an educator, I consider the H.E.L.P. Institute an invaluable
resource." -- Barbara Conley – 1st Grade
